NAME: Dirk Strider
CANON: Homestuck
REFERENCE LINK: Dirk's Wikia
CHARACTER BACKGROUND: 400 years into an alternate future, the human race has been taken over and subsequently wiped out by an alien race known as trolls. A lot of complicated time and universe mechanics are involved, but the short of it is that Dirk is friends with Roxy, the only other human still alive, and Jane and Jake, two other kids his age but living 400 years in the past. He keeps in contact with all of them via a web based (and time transcendent) chat program. Together they plan to play a meta-game called Sburb that will kind of destroy the planet but also if they play it right allow them to create a new one. This is probably an awful idea but frankly with a troll empresses with godlike powers running around, their options are limited.
Dirk is an ironic cool kid. Ironic because frankly not much about him is 'legitimately cool': his glasses are ridiculous, his hair is cliche, he cannot really rap that well, his tattoo is stupid, and he is a skinny 15 year old no matter how much ass he can very legitimately kick. But he knows all that. Self awareness (along with a masters in the art of irony) is one of Dirk's greatest assets. He is a person who is unrepentantly himself, whether that means being into puppet porn or admittedly emotionally invested in the lives of his friends. Unlike SOME CHARACTERS (coughdavecough) who would use irony as a shield to keep the world away from their insecurities, Dirk uses it to own everything about himself, flaws and all, and thus free himself. The result is a kid who is cool both for his ability to take a sword to a rocket fight and win, and for his willingness to sit down with his friends and talk to them about their feelings. Notably he's a bit more withdrawn about his own feelings, but will explain them in detail if pushed for it.
Dirk also has way too much free time on his hands. Part of the whole 'awesome self awareness' thing is that he never really sleeps. He has two bodies, and one of them is always conscious. However, neither body exists in a place with other humans, so his social interactions are still limited to whenever he can catch his friends online. The rest of his time goes into his various hobbies: studying old cultures, building robots and AIs, refining the art of irony, and most importantly: overthinking basically everything. He is a 15 year old philosopher, and thus is pretty fucking wise and also pretty fucking chill. Though he will (and does) ironically critique his friends to nudge them into considering things in a new light, he is also infinitely patient and does not really place many expectations on others. He is a good judge of character and tends to let others develop at their own pace, even if this means he spends years nudging them in a particular direction. Dirk just highly values self awareness and exploration, and even though he is probably intelligent and capable enough to straight up give his friends a lot of answers to their problems, making sure they go through the process of arriving at those answers themselves is very important to him.
The counterpoint to this is that Dirk will also use his considerable time and intellect to manipulate his friends. For their own good. But just because he wants them to run the course themselves doesn't mean he isn't happy to be the one to set it up for them.
This is because Dirk is such a mega bro to all of his friends. Part of the problem with never meeting anyone else in the world means that the people who do exist within his world are infinitely important to him; if it is for them there are absolutely no lengths that are too extreme. When he isn't trying to manipulate a situation to promote his friends to a higher evolution of their selves, he is offering direct (if metaphorically convoluted) emotional support because he is a bro and a good bro does not leave his friends in doubt as to whether or not he adores them.
This isn't to all say that despite the odds, Dirk is a totally healthy and normal boy. He is awesome, but much of his highly self aware and grown up nature is the result of certain fridge horror elements of his life. He not only has a lot of free time to himself, he is literally mentally older than any of his other friends, simply because he is conscious 30% more often than they are. His friends are the most important things in his world because despite how vast his intellect is, his personal universe is pretty much confined to a bedroom full of companions he had to build for himself. Much of his knowledge in how to people is entirely theoretical, because he has never given a real person so much as a fist bump, much less had an actual face-to-face conversation. He is, not so deep down, an intensely lonely boy who has dedicated his entire life to developing the capabilities he needs to play a game full of horrorterrors and make it work, as that is literally the only way he is ever going to escape solitude.
DEATH AND BEYOND: Dirk died by cutting off his own head (or rather, mailing it 400 years into the past so his best friend could kiss it and revive him. ...long story). It was a necessary step in a very complicated plan to pull him and his three other friends out of an extremely shitty situation involving volcanoes and space lightning and dying universes. He wasn't exactly keen to cut his head off but Dirk can awesome his way through most things, and he trusted that he would be revived shortly via Jake kissing his head.
So being propositioned by a god and finding that he is apparently dead FOR GOOD will be concerning on many levels. He will also agree to do basically anything to get back to life, since he will assume the plan failing will be due to some miscalculation on his part and if he does not get back, everyone he cares about will also die for good and it will be all his fault.
Dirk will likely take the path of divinity with the understanding he may (and would in fact prefer to) turn down divinity in the long run. He is a clever enough boy to realize that awesome cosmic powers are probably a huge drag on his very human self that he is rather fond of, but he will take that step if, through regaining his memories, he feels the situation warrants it. If he regains memories of a situation he thinks he can probably handle as an awesome mortal, he will just take the path of Liberty.
Dirk without memories will in a lot of ways be a very similar person. Certain aspects of his character, such as a love for stupid anime shades, rap, puppets, and ironic coolness are genetic aspects of his character, as they all appear in his nature through two different incarnations. It is safe to say that he will still be a really cool kid who owns his own interests with such a calm confidence that he makes all the other cool kids feel like posers. However, since he didn't actually grow up in a society or with any social pressures (other than to be cool and ironic), he will lack a lot of socialization skills inherent to most people. Basically, it is easy for this kid to go literally days without saying a word. He can also hella zone out on thinking about shit for lengths of time. Things like physical contact, face-to-face conversation, or just having other people around all the time will just be very weird situations for him and for a while he may appear more withdrawn than he actually is. He will also have to relearn some aspects of being a person, like how to support others by being aware of their emotional needs, rather than just following his natural urge to steamroll them onto a tough love path that will make them stronger even if it also leaves them a little emotionally scarred.
POWERS AND SKILLS: Dirk is hella ninja and proficient with various arms including but not limited to: katana, shuriken, grenades, rockets, and puppets. He can ride the airwaves on a rocket board, build robots, and write ridiculously complex programs, going so far as to build multiple AIs, even one of himself. His superpower is CONSCIOUSNESS, which is to say he never sleeps, and even if knocked out will be fully cognizant in any dream he appears in. If the game permits he probably also has a degree of dreamwalker powers. He is also a wicked multitasker. He may get other powers as canon progresses and tells me what they are.
